Sinusitis in children: symptoms and treatment

Sinusitis in children has pronounced symptoms and treatment should be followed immediately. With such a pathology as sinusitis in children (treatment is carried out taking into account the observations and recommendations of the doctor), parents encounter quite often. If you do not tackle this problem in a timely manner, then the child may get a chronic ailment, fraught with pain in the sinuses and a severe runny nose. Usually, pronounced sinusitis is observed in children aged 5 years and older.

It is necessary to treat such a pathology comprehensively. It is necessary to get rid of the causative agents of the disease, bring the sinuses back to normal, and restore the child’s proper breathing. Let’s look at ways to treat this disease in toddlers and older children. Sinusitis in children: symptoms can be found in the article, and treatment will be discussed below.

Sinusitis in children: drug treatment

Doctors use different drugs to fight this disease. Specialists prescribe an individual course of treatment for sinusitis in children. They take into account the age category of the patient, the presence of allergies to certain medicinal components, the stage of pathology and other features. It is very important to follow all the doctor’s recommendations, observe the regimen, apply drops, narrowing blood vessels and special sprays.

Sometimes it is possible to do without antibiotics. But if the effect of treatment is not observed, then the doctor prescribes such a drug. Today there are many antibiotics that are taken orally. Therefore, it is convenient for the child to be treated by them at home. First, antibiotics from the penicillin group are used. If there is an individual intolerance to these drugs or they do not lead to the desired effect, funds belonging to cephalosporins are involved.

But such funds will not always be able to help with the treatment of sinusitis. There were cases when children who could not be cured with such drugs at home were sent to a hospital for inpatient treatment. Most of them had a chlamydial infection that caused sinusitis. Cephalosporins and penicillins do not act on it. On the contrary, the use of such drugs can translate the disease into a chronic stage. Such patients require special remedies: antibiotics belonging to the macrolide group. They make it possible to recover from sinusitis in 90 cases out of 100. Therefore, antibiotics must be used correctly. Best of all, the doctor can do it. He will take into account all the features of a particular case, and select the right dosage of medication.

Most often, doctors use for the treatment of sinusitis:

hormones. They have anti-inflammatory effect. Swelling in the mucous membrane is removed;

mucolytics. The substances accumulated in the sinuses are diluted. Reduce inflammation;

antibiotics. Destroy harmful microorganisms. They struggle with the focus of inflammation;

vasoconstrictor drugs. Relieve swelling in the mucosa.

Some drugs (sprays, etc.) have one active element in their composition. Others have a whole range of such components.

The last resort is piercing the sinuses. It is psychologically difficult for the child to endure this procedure. In addition, it is very painful for children. Also, repeated punctures badly affect the condition of the sinus mucosa.

Flushing and piercing the sinuses
Sometimes a doctor who detects sinusitis in children (treatment of such a pathology should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist) recommends washing the sinuses. This allows you to remove along with the contents of pathogenic microorganisms, and to normalize their airiness. Such washing can be done at home, using specialized saline solutions. They are offered in a wide range at any pharmacy. Also, such drugs are made in the form of sprays with special nozzles that simplify this procedure.

If washing the house turned out to be ineffective, then it is done by an ENT doctor in a hospital or on an outpatient basis. This procedure is called rinsing Proetz. In rare cases, as mentioned above, sinus piercing is performed. It is carried out to remove pus from them. But most often a similar method of treatment is used in adolescence. The main thing is to approach the treatment of such a pathology responsibly, not to engage in the fight against the disease on your own, and be sure to be under the supervision of an ENT doctor. Then you can be sure of a positive outcome of treatment.
