The National Marrow Donor Program Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Research Program


The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is pleased to announce the availability of applications for the BMT Research Program. This research program is intended to advance the understanding of unrelated donor hematopoietic cell transplantation. For the current funding period, the research program will focus on "Issues that Improve Outcome in Cord Blood Transplantation." This program is made possible through contract funding provided by the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Division of Transplantation.

 Requirements and Conditions
  • Research proposals must address issues related to improving outcome in cord blood transplantation, for example, preventing or treating infections, accelerating immune recovery, etc.
  • Proposals should describe clinical or pre-clinical investigations. The intention is to award funding for two to three proposals; with at least one addressing a clinical investigation and one addressing a pre-clinical investigation. However, based on the scientific merit of the proposals, the NMDP reserves the right to fund all clinical investigations or all pre-clinical investigations.
  • Awards will be made for $175,000 over three years, subject to available funds.
  • Applicants will possess a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent).
  • Two to three applicants will be awarded funding. Awards will be announced in June 2004 for the funding period August 1, 2004 through July 31, 2007, subject to available funds.
  • For planning purposes, a letter of intent is requested on or before May 12, 2004.
  • Completed applications must be received on or before May 28, 2004.
  • Applications are available in Word document format online and can be downloaded.
